William Tempest vs CCTV Building

http://shanghaiist.com/attachments/shanghailaine/cctv_building.jpg

This CCTV building in China is very interesting in its revoltionary structure. It appears to be designed as the letter "A." The light from the windows and the setting sun reflect off the metal skeleton of the structure.

This dress, part of a line designed by William Tempest for a chairity. This dress is made entirely of mosquito nets. The geometric lines form interlocking shapes, similar to how the different levels of the architecture of the CCTV building seem to just "fit together." Her dress is both black and gray with silver metallic accents, which reflect light like the windows of the building.

Valentino vs Mummy

http://www.virtourist.com/africa/cairo/42.htm

This is a photograph of a mummy from a museum in Cairo, Egypt. The interesting thing about Egyptian culture is that the people wanted to preserve their dead bodies to keep them safe and contained for the afterlife. They used fine linen to wrap the bodies of the dead. The horizontal strips of fabric create a rhythmic effect.

This dress is from Valentino's Spring 2010 Collection. Its fabric is very lightweight and it appears to be wrapped around the body. The majority of the dress is a nude or cream color, so it resembles the stained linen discovered on the mummy body. The fabric appears as if it is just raveling off the body, and if someone pulled on the yellow fabric, the dress would fall apart.

Alexander McQueen vs Accordion

This accordion has lines everywhere in its design. There are many lines of multiple sizes, material, and color. The deep red color gives the instrument a sense of energy and the lacqured finish makes the instrument appear elegant.

This design is from the late Alexander McQueen's Fall 2010 Collection. This skirt features a rhythm of many vertical lines, created by the gathering of fabri at the waist. The lines are strikingly similar to the creased fabric on an accordion. Much like the accordion's nice texture, this skirt is made of a rich, thick fabric to help keep the garment's shape.

Armani Prive vs Crescent

This image is of Neptune and Triton creating a crescent phase in 1989 (astronet.ru). Its curved lines meet at a sharp point at the top and the bottom of the crescent. The light on the planet creates a warm glow.

This ensemble, from Armani Prive's Spring 2010 Collection, uses lines to create crescent closures on the front of the top. Unlike the other crescent though, the shapes on the top are black instead of glowing with light. The designer incorporated extreme curves in this design compared to a real crescent.

Dries Van Noten vs Broom

http://mineforthemaking.blogspot.com/2010/10/witchs-broom.html

This broom is black, with very natural, strong fibers used for the bristles. The broom's design is very structured. The bottom of the broom has layers to increase its efficiency.

This dress from Dries Van Noten's Fall 2010 Collection is very similar to the broom in a few ways. They are both black, with a structured, purposeful design. They are both very utilitarian, and the design of the skirt's hem line proves to support the structure of the garment, much like the layered design of the broom. Visible lines are seen in the broom where the bristles seperate and they are seen on the dress where it isgathered at the waist.

Gaultier vs Web

This spider web is a simple yet intracate design composed of intersections of hair-thin lines. The water molecules that have gathered on the web make the web appear glossy.

This dress, from Jean Paul Gaultier's Fall 2008 Collection is merely an intracate design of intersecting lines. The material is snug and the lines appear fluid and curved. The metallic sheen of the fabric gives the garment a glossy look, much like the water on the spider web.

Gaultier vs Guadalupe

This image is of the Virgin Guadalupe. She has flower petals aranged behind her in a radiating pattern of lines. The lines are both fine and sharp on some leaves and soft and less sharp on others. The radiating petals represent her holiness, her light, and her crown.

This headpiece, featured in Jean Paul Gaultier's Spring 2010 Collection, is very similar to the radiating lines of Guadalupe's "Holiness." The focal point is white, driving the pure and holy points further. The lines are mostly sharply pointed, but some of the lines are different lengths and are layered.
